120 convention centres across France
Though there is no internationally accepted definition of a convention centre, we consider it to be a purpose-built centre which includes at least one auditorium, committee rooms, offices available to the organisers, an expo area and a dining hall.
High growth in the 80’s and 90’s
Convention centres started spreading across France in the early 80’s. There were thirty-nine convention centres in France in 1980. Between 1980 and 2000 eighty new convention centres were built in France, including in its overseas territories. After a peak rate of four new convention centres per year on average, construction rates seem to have slowed down.
Small organisations
Convention centres are small businesses: 64% of convention centres employ less than 21 permanent staff. In all, French convention centres employ some 2500 people. Three regions (Paris Ile-de-France, Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur, Rhône-Alpes) account for 40% of French convention centres.
